In this game, globetrotters, young and old alike, will travel the world to discover monsters, spirits and other legendary creatures, beautifully illustrated by Maud Chalmel (Take Time, Behind, Unlock! Kids).
Maud shares with us: "I loved imagining the world of The Encyclopedia of Monsters, especially since illustrating for children is as enjoyable as it is demanding. The challenge was to avoid the clichés of “too cute” drawings by using bolder, more graphic lines, while retaining colour and softness (you can't change who you are!). Between making monsters less terrifying – and almost endearing – and accurately representing cultures, The Encyclopedia of Monsters was a stimulating and enriching adventure, where each illustration tells a story and invites the reader on a journey."
The Encyclopedia of Monsters comes in five colourful volumes, like a real encyclopedia, representing the five continents of the world. Each volume contains everything you need to explore three different countries. Each country offers a new way to play, with its own challenges, rules, and monsters.
On your turn, play a Monster card, use its power, and try to find the matching token. If the monster is found, it remains visible; if not, a candle goes out, and all the monsters go back into hiding... You'll have to start over, remembering their locations. Teamwork and memory will be your best allies in finding all the monsters!
The team of designers confides: "We imagined The Encyclopedia of Monsters as a little bit of memory choreography. The idea is that it's not enough to remember things on your own: you really have to work with others to achieve the “perfect move”. We drew on folklore to pique children's curiosity and make them want to discover these creatures as they play. The game gains depth as you play, so that children always find a new challenge as the gameplay develops."
But The Encyclopedia of Monsters is not just a game: with every turn of the page, your little explorers will learn more about the creatures and local customs of each country, as told by their inhabitants.
Manuel Sanchez, director of Scorpion Masqué studio, shares: "This game was born from the idea of taking children on a journey and introducing them to other cultures, so we went out and found specialists from all over the world to tell us about their countries in their own words! This is representative of the exceptional care taken in creating the Encyclopedia, which brings together one of the world’s most talented teams of board games designers for children. The Encyclopedia of Monsters is quite simply the most ambitious children's game Scorpion Masqué has produced since its foundation 20 years ago. That's right! Scorpion Masqué is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year!"
